Volunteer Recruiting: Mindset

a few months ago a client asked me to lead a workshop on volunteer recruiting it might be my inflated ego, but I enjoyed the process of developing it and thought it had some excellent points. So the next few weeks of blog post will be on volunteer recruiting. This entry is on mindset.
One of the largest mistakes that volunteer recruiters make, and the thing that stresses them the most is that they feel responsible for recruiting volunteers, and fall into the trap of thinking "I need to find someone to do this task for me" while that is true on the surface, it is not accurate theologically and leads to just finding a warm body.
When recruiting leaders you are only responsible for finding the person(s) that The Lord has called. And in fact when asking potential volunteers you are giving a blessing to the person(s). Service in the Lords ministry is a reward in itself. Yes it can be taxing and frustrating, but I believe that the Lord goes before us to the hearts and minds of volunteer leaders in our ministries.
We must wrap our minds around that fact that we bless them in asking as much as they bless us in responding with a no or a yes, because while a "yes" lets us breath a little easier, a "no" allows us to know that the person called to that ministry is still waiting to hear from us on behalf of the Lord. Which leads to the phrase that makes a children's and family ministry leaders' heart sing "I was waiting for someone to Ask me to serve".
